THE NEIGHBORHOOD — Surprise parties are nothing but trouble. For starters, it's nearly impossible to keep the party a secret. Whether the person being celebrated knows there's gonna be a party or just suspects "something fishy is going on," it's rare to present a true surprise.
Also, surprise parties are anticlimactic. Once the person walks in and everybody screams "surprise," the energy usually leaves the room. Sure, there might be games and food, but after awkwardly hiding behind the couch for 20 minutes before the guest of honor's arrival, people aren't as interested in the cold mozzarella sticks and lukewarm soda being offered in the kitchen.
So maybe it's best to have a true surprise at these parties. Like the one featured in this video.
Of course, this little girl didn't mean to drop the cake. But it made the moment truly memorable. And I love seeing how lovingly her parents reacted to the mishap.
Is this what needs to happen at every surprise party? Or am I missing something and surprise parties are actually the best thing on earth? I guess I need to go to a few more and see what they look like when done right. If you're planning a surprise party for a loved one and need one more guest, go ahead and give me a holler.
