PROVO — The Utah Valley Marathon is back again for its 17th year this June, giving participants an opportunity to run a scenic course while giving to charity.

The Utah Valley Marathon was started in 2008 by Utah marathon runners who wanted to create a memorable running experience and also encourage service in the community.

The predominantly downhill race starts in Wallsburg, goes past the south of Deer Creek Reservoir, down the Provo Canyon and finishes with a 6-mile stretch along University Avenue that ends at the Utah County Courthouse park.

Kids On The Move and Charity Vision were picked to be receiving charities from the 2024 race. Anyone can create a team to fundraise for either charity and if they earn enough money, they can race for free.

Kids On The Move is an Orem nonprofit that provides services to support families with children challenged by poverty, developmental delays, autism, disabilities and child care needs. The nonprofit said in a press release all proceeds it receives will go toward its mission of "empowering families, one child at a time."

Charity Vision is a nonprofit that focuses on empowering local physicians in the developing world and creating sustainable solutions to blindness worldwide. Proceeds from the race will help the charity change lives through funding sight-restoring surgeries.

The Utah Valley Marathon will be on June 1, along with the half marathon, 10K race and the children's 1K race. A 5K race is held the evening before, on May 31. All proceeds from the Utah Valley Marathon races go to the charities.

The race is a Boston Marathon qualifier and is often considered a "fast" race because of its low-grade downhill slope and minimal turns that aid runners' speed.
