THE NEIGHBORHOOD — As every kid knows, there are houses that give out lousy Halloween candy, and there are houses that are so amazing you almost want to go home, do a costume change and then return for round two.
These coveted houses usually give out king-sized candy bars, but there are some notable exceptions. When I was a kid, there was a house in my town that handed out VHS tapes of Disney movies. For real. I got "The Little Mermaid" one year and "The Great Mouse Detective" the following Halloween.
Word spreads pretty quick through the grapevine in these situations, meaning the so-called "good-candy house" gets hit by trick-or-treaters early and often on Halloween. In fact, you might miss out completely if you don't get there within the first hour or two. The true unicorns of the Halloween world are the houses that give out epic treats and have so many of them, they never run out. Even the older kids, tenaciously knocking doors at 10 p.m., will be rewarded for their efforts.
I loved this video because it shows just how passionate kids are about the best candy houses.
According to the video's description, the action took place in New York. After an excited kid yelled out, "They have the good candy," trick-or-treaters from all around began flocking to the front door.
Frankly, I'm shocked that a kid identified the "good-candy house" so openly. It's usually the type of thing you would tell your friends but wouldn't want to proclaim publicly. An under-the-radar house like this needs to be preserved so you can be sure you're one of the first visitors each Halloween.
