KEARNS – A 15-month-old girl drowned in a backyard pool in Kearns on Friday evening, police said.
Emergency dispatchers received a call reporting an unresponsive toddler at 4540 W. 5600 South just after 5 p.m. Unified police detective Arlan Bennett said the girl was airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital and pronounced dead an hour later.
Bennet said that the incident happened at a private residence where some kids were playing in the backyard when the 15-month-old crawled into a smaller pool and drowned.
"The family actually had preventative measures for the pool area," he said. "We're not sure if either another child or one of the pets opened the gate, but the child got access (to the pool)."
Bennett said police believe this to be a tragic accident.
