LOGAN — Two brothers, ages 14 and 18, injured in a car crash in Logan on Monday continue to receive treatment for their critical injuries.
Kirubel and Surafel Mesfin were flown to separate hospitals, where Kirubel, the older brother, received emergency brain and heart surgeries, relatives said in a GoFundMe* account established to help the family.
About 8 a.m., a water truck was driving south on 1000 West approaching 1800 South at the same time the brothers' Nissan Altima was waiting at a stop sign to turn left across the southbound lane, Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen said.
The Altima then pulled out and was struck in the driver's door by the water truck. The crash forced the Altima into another vehicle that was waiting to turn left onto 1800 South, Jensen said.
"We believe it's a miracle that the two have survived and know that what the family needs most is our community coming together to show them our love and support. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers," family members said on the GoFundMe.
While Kirubel Mesfin's heart and brain surgeries were successful, family members said, "He still has more procedures to repair his broken arms, wrists, hips and spine." The 18-year-old is a senior at Logan High School, according to the campaign.
"He is passionate about soccer and academics and is set to graduate this May with big dreams of attending college after," the family said.
Surafel, meanwhile, was described as in "stable" condition but faces "a long road to recovery," the GoFundMe states. The 14-year-old is a sophomore at Logan High School, and family members described him as "passionate about his studies and his involvement in student government."
No one else was injured in the crash.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but witnesses said it appeared the Altima failed to yield the right of way, according to the police chief.
