MAGNA — A Cyprus High School student faces criminal charges accusing him of threatening classmates with a knife.

Colten Adams, 18, of Magna, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with three counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, a class B misdemeanor.

On Feb. 9, near the area where buses pick up and drop off students at Cyprus High, 8623 W. 3000 South, a boy was asked by his sister's friend to talk to Adams who "was making the girls uncomfortable and ask him to stop," according to charging documents.

When the boy approached Adams, Adams "pulled a knife from his pocket and opened the blade" and then "came at" the boy, the charges state. Other students had to help push Adams away.

Three other students told police that Adams "swung a knife" at them, "causing them to jump back to avoid being stabbed or hurt," according to the charges.

The school resource officer was contacted and was able to find school surveillance video of the incident, which corroborated the victims' statements, the charges allege. The officer, along with a school administrator then found Adams in a classroom. The teacher and other students were asked to leave the classroom while the officer approached him.

"When Adams reached toward his pockets, (the officer) took him into custody and put handcuffs on him," the charges say.

A knife was found in Adams' pocket, according to police.
