THE FRONT PORCH — Sometimes people go out of their way to do the right thing. It's something they don't have to do, and no one would fault them for not doing it, but they do it anyway.

When my wife and I bought the house we're in now, we were doing some updates on our own. We didn't really know what we were doing, but we did it anyway. I finished hanging new drywall in the basement and had just wrapped up the new baseboards and trim. We were ready to paint — my least favorite part — and then we could move in.

Well, my body decided this would be a great time to have appendicitis and put me in the hospital for surgery. I spent a couple of days in the hospital and then went back to our temporary home: my in-laws house. I was in bed thinking about finishing the basement when my brother-in-law gave me a surprise. He painted the entire basement of my house — the new trim, the walls and the ceiling.

He didn't have to do that, but it was awesome that he did. And he did it because he's a good guy.

The cop in this video is like my brother-in-law — he's just a good guy.

A woman in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, ordered Arby's from DoorDash and got a big surprise when she answered the door. Instead of a DoorDash driver, she found a police officer at her front door with her curly fries and Beef 'n' Cheddars.

I actually have no idea what her order was, but this officer showed up and handed her the food. He then explained her original delivery driver was arrested — we're not sure why — and couldn't complete the job. So, in the coolest move possible, this cop grabbed the goods, resisted the urge to steal a few fries and delivered the woman's food.

Let's be more like this officer and my brother-in-law. Let's be kind just for the sake of being kind.
