SALT LAKE CITY — For the first time during the pandemic, Utah's daily count of new COVID-19 cases surpassed 10,000 on Wednesday as health officials reported 10,220.
The state also reported 14 additional deaths.
The rolling, seven-day average for cases is now 8,975 per day, and the average rate of people testing positive is 35.5%, the Utah Department of Health said. On Wednesday, 608 people were hospitalized with the disease across Utah, an increase of 29 since Tuesday's report.
Health care workers throughout the state tested 25,170 people for COVID-19 since Tuesday, and 12,704 vaccine doses were administered, including booster shots. Now 4,672,347 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given in Utah.
Just under 64% of residents ages 5 and older have been fully vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Meanwhile, 37.5% of residents have received booster shots, according to the state health department.
School-age children accounted for 2,304 of the new cases reported Wednesday — 640 cases were ages 5-10, 546 cases were ages 11-13, and 1,118 cases were ages 14-17.
Among Wednesday's cases, the state also confirmed 4,663 breakthrough cases that were confirmed in fully vaccinated people, as well as four additional breakthrough deaths. In all, there have been 103,195 breakthrough cases, which is now about 14% of all confirmed COVID-19 cases in Utah, and 393 breakthrough deaths, about 10% of all COVID-19 deaths, have been reported in Utah since vaccines became available.
The state estimates as of Tuesday — the latest day for which this data is available — that 104,167 people in Utah have active COVID-19 infections. That is about 14.3% of Utah's total 726,216 cases since the pandemic began.

- A Salt Lake County woman, 65-84, unknown if hospitalized
- A Utah County man, 45-64, hospitalized
- Three Utah County men, 65-84, hospitalized
- An Iron County man, 65-84, hospitalized
- A Sanpete County man, 65-84, hospitalized
- A Tooele County man, 65-84, hospitalized
- A Weber County man, 65-84, hospitalized
- A Weber County man, older than 85, hospitalized
- A Utah County man, older than 85, hospitalized
- A Wasatch County woman, 45-64, hospitalized
- A Salt Lake County man, 45-64, hospitalized
