OGDEN — A fire early Tuesday destroyed an 82-year-old Ogden bakery.

About 10:07 p.m. crews were called to Topper Bakery at 2516 Monroe Blvd. Flames and smoke were already coming from the roof. No occupants were inside, the Ogden Fire Department said in a statement.

Initially, firefighters attempted to battle the blaze from within the building, but they withdrew because of the heavy flames and fought the fire from outside.

The response included 21 firefighters from Ogden and South Ogden with two ladder trucks, three engines, an ambulance and a paramedic unit. Crews extinguished the fire within an hour, said Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Mike Slater.

No one was injured, but the building was described as a total loss with an estimated $250,000 in damage.

"Topper's Bakery has been a staple in our community for over 82 years. So it's a sad day for one of our local businesses," Slater said. "Hopefully we can help them rebuild and get back to doing business as normal."

Owners of Topper Bakery announced the fire on Facebook Tuesday morning.

"Needless to say we will not be open for business for a while. Thank you for all of your support over the years! We will keep you posted on what is going on and when we can," according to the post.

A GoFundMe page* is seeking fund to help rebuild the bakery.

A fire investigator was working Tuesday to determine the cause.
