SALT LAKE CITY — Check back here for the latest scores from all the Week 1 high school football games across the state.
Game of the Week: Orem at East
Why did we choose this game?
Is there anybody that can stop Orem in the 5A classification? The Tigers are going for their fifth consecutive state title are the favorites, once again, to claim the title. Orem opens up the season at No. 4 in the preseason KSL.com Top 20+1 rankings and are only topped by the higher division powers of Region 4 led by Corner Canyon.
East is always a powerhouse and 2021 should be no different, though this time they're back in 5A after spending the last four years in 6A. The Leopards check in at No. 8 this year and should be a good test for Orem as two of the top teams in 5A. The Leopards have a tall task ahead of them as they go from Orem to games against Corner Canyon and Lone Peak before region play.
What better way to start the season than two top team battling it out for 5A supremacy. The game begins at 7 p.m. ad should be worth paying close attention to. We'll recap the game, so check back later to see how it all unfolded.
Other top matchups
- Pair of special teams plays help Lone Peak pull away from Timpview in season opener
- Bingham pulls away from Weber in second half en route to 55-35 victory
- Brighton shakes off slow start to overwhelm Pleasant Grove 49-24
Week notes: Highland at Bountiful
The Week 1 game between Highland and Bountiful was canceled Friday morning due to a positive result of COVID-19 in the Highland program.
The game was supposed to be the first under Bountiful's new mascot, the Redhawks, after the school changed from its long-held mascot "Braves" last spring after receiving complaints from the community's Native American community.
It's the first high school football cancellation of the season in Utah a year after the COVID-19 pandemic wrecked schedules across the state, right up through the playoffs. The pandemic cancellations were ruled "no contests" rather than forfeits under Utah High School Activities Association guidelines from last year.
