TAYLORSVILLE — An 18-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a middle school after it was closed and later threatening the principal.
Police responded to a burglary alarm at Eisenhower Middle School, 4351 S. Redwood Road, on Wednesday night after the school was closed, according to a police affidavit.
A hammer was found that detectives believe was used to break one of the front doors — causing "extensive damage" — allowing the suspect to enter the school and cause more damage.
"This damage included shattered glass, broken doors, and broken personal items. The damage was estimated to be over $1,500 but less than $5,000," the affidavit states.
Using surveillance video, police were able to identify and find the 18-year-old suspect riding a bicycle on Redwood Road. When questioned about the vandalism to the school, the man said that he wanted to "'trash the place because he did not like the principal. The accused party stated if the principal had been there tonight, he would have killed him," according to the affidavit.
The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated burglary, criminal mischief and making a threat against a school or school employee.
