KYIV — Last week, heavy rain and freezing temperatures left the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv covered in ice. It made driving, and even walking, difficult throughout the city.
Utahns know a thing or two about icy weather. What we don't normally have to contend with is cobblestone streets. That seems to be the main problem for the woman in this featured video, who is trying to walk a short distance up a slight hill with no luck whatsoever.
The video clip begins with two people sliding down the hill toward the CCTV camera, showing the viewer just how icy it is. That's when our friend, with the additional burden of a backpack, enters the frame from the bottom and begins her arduous trek toward a staircase at the top of the screen.
A passing man helps the woman for a moment, but he soon gives up when she falls near him and slides right back to where she began. The woman's most successful attempt comes when she tries walking on her hands and knees; but as soon as she stands up again, she falls down and slides right back to the bottom of the hill.
She's like a cold, rock-less version of Sisyphus. Or like the year 2020, which was just getting started when a pandemic knocked us down and more calamities followed.
Eventually, the woman gives up on this particular hill. But even walking away proves problematic, as she's unable to keep her feet even while stumbling off the right side of the screen. As if to add insult to injury, the footage ends with another woman sliding gracefully down the hill without falling.
At times, 2020 has made us all feel like the woman in this video. Here's to a less slippery 2021.
