CEDAR CITY — A man was arrested Wednesday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run, police said.

Jacob Schmidt, 25, of Cedar City, was arrested and booked into Iron County Jail on investigation of murder charges, Cedar City police said.

Police say Schmidt intentionally and fatally struck a 37-year-old man with his car about 7 p.m. Monday in a Home Depot parking lot at 1518 S. Providence Center Drive.

Police initially sought the public’s help in identifying and locating the driver. They identified Schmidt after a resident reported an abandoned car just west of Cedar City matching the description of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Detectives identified Schmidt after gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Schmidt was arrested during a traffic stop on Wednesday, police said.

Last month, the 25-year-old was charged with driving on a suspended or revoked license, a class C misdemeanor; and a speeding infraction, for speeding 94 mph in an 80 mph zone, according to court documents.

As of Wednesday afternoon, charges had not been filed in the hit-and-run.
