SALT LAKE CITY — Another driver of a semitruck lost control of his rig near Bear Lake Tuesday morning, sending the large rig into Raspberry Square in Garden City, Rich County, without brakes.

But Utah Highway Patrol troopers say this time, deep snow helped slow the vehicle and brought it to a stop just 40 feet from the nearest structure. No one was injured.

The accident happened in the same spot as the past two semi crashes in Garden City.

On Aug. 20, a large dump truck hauling asphalt crashed at the intersection of U.S. 89 and state Route 30, known as Raspberry Square. Three storage units were damaged in that incident.

On Aug. 15, the brakes of a semitrailer headed downhill at the same intersection overheated. The driver was unable to stop at the stop sign and rolled through the intersection, crashing into a storage facility.

According to a tweet from the Bear Lake community, Tuesday’s crash was the fourth in 18 months due to a semi losing its brakes.

On Oct. 10, 2018, a semitrailer overturned at the intersection and slid into a sporting goods store. The driver in that crash, Ahmed Abdelgader, 31, of Omaha, Nebraska, was killed and a passenger was critically injured.

The garages that were previously damaged are almost completely repaired and it would have been tragic to see them destroyed again,” Bear Lake tweeted.
