THE THEATER — Be prepared to get comfortable when “Avengers: Endgame” debuts in a month — you’ll be spending a long time in the theater if you go to see it.
The highly anticipated culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will run 3 hours and 2 minutes, according to multiple reports. It debuts on April 26.
AMC Theaters accidentally confirmed the runtime over the weekend on a landing page for “Endgame,” and movie ticket service Fandango also revealed the movie’s length Tuesday in a now-deleted Tweet, according to Indiewire.
Marvel Studios itself has remained silent on the movie’s length so far. It’s still unclear if there will be an intermission during screenings.
That means “Endgame” will be the longest movie in the MCU by a large margin. “Avengers: Infinity War” is the lengthiest Marvel movie otherwise, clocking in at 2 hours and 29 minutes.
Here’s some “Avengers” math for you: The main cast of “Endgame” includes at least 27 named characters, according to IMDB.
With a 182-minute runtime, that averages out to just under 7 minutes of screen time for each of those “Endgame” characters. (There will obviously be lots of scenes including multiple characters, though.)
But if you saw “Infinity War,” you know that there are a lot more characters in the MCU that may or may not show up in “Endgame.”
Most big blockbuster movies hover somewhere between 90 and 120 minutes, but ultralong blockbusters pop up every now and then.
One of the most famous examples of that is the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The non-extended versions “The Fellowship of the Ring,”“The Two Towers” and “Return of the King” are 178, 179 and 201 minutes, respectively.
Theatergoers in the early 2000s were unfazed by those gargantuan runtimes. The three movies made a combined $1.03 billion at the U.S. box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
And though it’s not as long as “Endgame,” “Infinity War” wasn’t exactly short, either. Despite that, it made $679 million at the box office last year.
Barring a Thanos-level catastrophe, “Endgame” is probably destined for major box office success, too. With 11 years of MCU buildup, audiences likely won’t be able to resist the conclusion next month.
