MANTUA, Box Elder County — Mantua Police Chief Shane Zilles was arrested Tuesday afternoon for investigation of DUI.
Zilles was driving a Mantua police patrol car on state Route 91 about 5 p.m. when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted his vehicle traveling at a "high rate of speed" without any emergency lights or sirens, said UHP trooper Nick Street.
The patrol car was going fast enough that it caught the trooper's attention, he said. The driver was also having a hard time staying in his lane, Street said.
The trooper first spotted Zilles near the county line between Box Elder and Cache counties and pulled him over about 7 miles later in Cache County, he said.
Several troopers assisted in the traffic stop. Zilles was cooperative, according to Street. After performing filed sobriety tests, troopers arrested him for investigation of DUI.
Street said investigators believe Zilles was under the influence of prescription medications. It was unknown Wednesday if Zilles had been prescribed those medications. Street said troopers did not suspect alcohol or illegal drugs were involved.
Zilles was taken to a local hospital to be checked for an undisclosed "medical condition," Street said. Troopers issued Zilles a citation and let the hospital take over from there.
