SALT LAKE CITY — Police released the name of an 18-year-old Monday who was killed in an early-morning weekend shooting near the state Capitol, officials said.
Raul Castillo Rivera was shot about 12:38 a.m. Saturday near 644 N. Darwin St. but died shortly after at a hospital in Bountiful, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department's watch log.
Salt Lake police responded to reports of the shooting early Saturday but could not find any evidence of the incident. A short time later, they received a call from police in Bountiful who informed them that Castillo Rivera was in the hospital and had been shot near the state Capitol.
Castillo Rivera died soon after.
Officers were able to find further evidence after conducting interviews and locating handgun casings in the area, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Yvette Zayas.
Police are still investigating the shooting. Zayas said she did not know if it was gang-related.
