President Nelson announces 12 new temples

President Russell M. Nelson concluded the 188th Semiannual General Conference by announcing 12 new temples, including one in Washington County, Utah, and new temples in nine different countries overall.

More than ministering

Elder Gary E. Stevenson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke the need for members of the church to be like shepherds to those around them. Elder Stevenson urged members to minister to others, which he said includes a call for members to be more than just being nice to one another. He used the example of a sheepdog who refused to abandon his sheep in the cold when they became lost in the winter.

Now is the time

Elder Jack N. Gerard of the Seventy asked church members to thoroughly examine their lives and identify areas that need change, improvement or corrections. “If there are things in your life that need changing, today is the perfect time to change,” he said, paraphrasing one of his doctors when he was having chest pains at one time.

The importance of repentance

Elder Dale G. Renlund, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke about the importance of repentance, and of choosing to follow God's plan. He said the process of repenting is a lifelong process that is crucial to keep people on the path of Jesus Christ.

Wilt thou be made whole?

Elder Matthew L. Carpenter of the Seventy shared several examples from the Bible of healing, and spoke of how church members can receive healing in their own lives. Healing is not just for physical maladies, he said, but for mental and emotional struggles, such as depression, anxiety and mental illness. “Jesus Christ can heal more than just our physical bodies,” Elder Carpenter said. “He can heal our spirits as well.” He also said that repentance is necessary for all members of the church, not just to fix mistakes, but as a part of the church’s doctrine of the plan of salvation.

Seeing others with the love of Christ

Elder Robert C. Gay, General Authority Seventy, shared how individuals could take the name of Jesus Christ upon them. He highlighted this by sharing an example of giving a healing blessing to his ailing sister, who had personal struggles with her membership in the church before she died. In that moment, Elder Gay said he was prompted to know that she held “goodness,” and that she was defined by more than her struggles.

While members and non-members alike may struggle with mental illness, depression, addiction, doubts or other issues, Elder Gay said he believes Jesus Christ’s love doesn’t exclude people because of their struggles. Brother Brian K. Ashton of the church’s Sunday School general presidency invited church members to learn about the nature and attributes of God.

Try, Try, Try

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said members of the church should try to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ. They do this by exercising charity.

He referred to members of the church who are often quick to volunteer after natural disasters, and the many youth who have decided to serve as missionaries.

‘What’s in a name? … everything.’

In his Sunday morning address, President Russell M. Nelson explained the church’s recent decision to clarify the name of the church and discourage the use of nicknames. President Nelson talked of the mixed reaction received after the Aug. 16 declaration, both from church members and those not affiliated with the faith. But he explained the reason for the correction was to make sure Jesus Christ’s name appears prominently in the name of His church, even when using shortened references for the church. Since Jesus Christ named the church, President Nelson said, the name is not negotiable. He promised members if they would do their best to restore the correct name of the church, the Lord would pour out blessings upon the church and its members.

Tests and trials wound all, but God is there to help

Elder Neil L. Andersen, a member of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, directed his message specifically to church members who are confronted with unexpected and painful trials. These tests and trials come simply because they are a part of life, Elder Andersen explained. He said it’s important to note that such painful struggles often become the best teachers. Elder Andersen cautioned all church members to be prepared for such trials, and reminded them that they are not expected to pass through trials without the help of God.

The Book of Mormon and the power of conversion

Elder Shayne M. Bowen, a General Authority Seventy, spoke of the role the Book of Mormon has in helping church members address questions regarding the church’s history, teachings and practices. The key to answering those questions lies in whether or not one knows Joseph Smith is a prophet, he said, quoting a manual for the church's missionaries. Individuals can know this if they read and pray about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, he added. He said the Book of Mormon, a book of scripture that members study as a companion to the Bible, helps strengthen church members' testimonies. It also helps members keep “the covenants of the Eternal Father,” which include missionary work.

Begin your ‘ministry of reconciliation’

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke to Latter-day Saints about the importance of forgiving and forgetting. Those wounds need to be healed so life can be as rewarding as God intended it to be, he said. While Elder Holland said he understands forgiveness can be hard to give, he emphasized that the path to true healing is the “forgiving path” that Christ walked. He ended his remarks by encouraging church members to be “meek and courageous” enough to seek reconciliation where necessary.

Minister to each other

Sister Bonnie H. Cordon, general president of the Young Women organization, spoke of the various ways people can minister in the church. The practice of visiting and caring for neighbors was previously known in the church as "home and visiting teaching." Ministering, she said, could happen through bonding over a shared interest in music, or start with sending a selfie. She said it also comes in the form of connecting with others during their difficult times. Sister Cordon noted that coming together through difficult times is what bonds members of the church together. She also urged young men and women to seek ministering assignments, and said that actively participating in ministering is a beneficial experience for all people.

Study the ‘Vision of the Redemption of the Dead’

President M. Russell Ballard, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke of the vision that his great-grandfather and sixth president of the church, Joseph F. Smith, received in October 1918, just weeks before his death. Known as the “Vision of the Redemption of the Dead," the revelation is recorded in a Latter-day Saint book of scripture known as the Doctrine and Covenants. It appears in the 138th section, and gives an account of what Latter-day Saints believe happens to people after they die. As this conference marked the 100th anniversary of the revelation, President Ballard invited church members to read and study the vision in order to more fully understand the Lord’s plan for them. President Ballard's address came days after the death of his wife Barbara.

Sunday morning kicks off with 'Music and the Spoken Word'

Prior to the Sunday morning session of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ semiannual general conference, the audience of conferencegoers was treated to a performance by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. Lloyd Newell, announcer for the choir’s weekly broadcast of “Music and the Spoken Word,” told the audience Sunday morning’s performance marked the show's 4,642nd broadcast. Saturday wrap up

The Saturday general conference sessions saw a few significant events:

Church leadership announced a "home-centered" and "church-supported" shift in worship, which includes a shortened meeting schedule.

For the first time, the session for women and girls was held on the same weekend as the rest of the sessions.

Another first: The full First Presidency, the highest governing body in the church, spoke in Women's Session

President Russell M. Nelson challenged the women of the church to start a 10-day fast from social media and any media that may be damaging or harmful

President Nelson also challenged the women to read the Book of Mormon, a seminal book of scripture for members of the faith, by the end of the year.

President Nelson issues a four-prong challenge to the women of the church

President Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said he once gave a talk in South America when he accidentally described himself “as a mother of 10 children.” The translator of his talk knew what he meant and changed the word “mother” to “father,” but the church leader didn’t realize his mistake until afterward. “The deep longing in my heart to make a difference in the world like only a mother does bubbled up in my heart,” President Nelson said, adding that he chose to become a medical doctor only because he could not choose to become a mother.

Live the gospel and ‘be kind to one another’

In his address to the Latter-day Saint women, President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency of the church, spoke of how obedience to gospel principles helps women of the church navigate the difficulties of life. He focused much of his remarks to the young women of the church, saying their understanding of Heavenly Father’s eternal plan of happiness helps them to solve problems more easily and make better decisions in life. President Oaks also counseled the young women on two main items: cellphone use and kindness. He urged young women not to spend too much time on their phones, and to be kind to others. Small actions of unkindness can have devastating consequences, he said.

Women will play a ‘primary role’ in the acceleration of God’s work in the ‘last days’

President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the church’s First Presidency, reminded members of the church that God would accelerate His work and pour out knowledge on the members of His church in the “last days.” God made it clear that “the daughters of Heavenly Father will play a primary role in that acceleration,” President Eyring said.

Women have the responsibility to nourish and nurture their children in equal partnership with their husbands. God gave the sisters of the church the charge to be the principle gospel educators in the family, most likely because of women’s increased “capacity to love,” President Eyring said.

As the third speaker, Sister Cristina B. Franco, second counselor in the Primary general presidency, spoke of the importance of selfless sacrifice and service.

To illustrate this, she shared the story of a Primary teacher from her youth who made a chocolate cake for her students every week with money she could have used to pay the bus fare for her family to get to church. Sister Franco said sisters should ask if they’re giving their all as they contemplate the sacrifices they are making and the service they are giving in their lives. The difference between 'divine discontent' and discouragement

Sister Michelle Lynn Craig, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, encouraged the women of the church to “live and care in a higher and holier way.” Oftentimes, women in the church will feel that they can do and be more than what they already are. Craig said this is called “divine discontent.” That feeling can spur those who experience “divine discontent” to want to close the gap between who they are and who they want to be. However, those who feel there is a gap should be careful that those feelings do not turn into discouragement when they wallow over their shortcomings.

Serving ‘For Him’

Sister Joy D. Jones, general president of the Primary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke of service and the importance of knowing who and why one serves. Doing so, she said, helps one to understand “the highest manifestation of love is devotion to God.” Church members should work to worship and serve God by loving his children, Sister Jones said. And in making God their main priority, she promised church members they would find themselves.

Believe, Love, Do

Even in hard times, the gospel of Jesus Christ offers hope, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles said in the concluding remarks of Saturday afternoon’s session of general conference. Even when life feels the most “vain and devoid of meaning,” he said, the “good news” of the gospel offers hope. Elder Uchtdorf implored members of the church to follow Jesus Christ’s example of service, and promised blessings to those who lose their lives for Christ’s sake, as the Bible says. Discipleship, he added, begins with three words: believe, love and do.

The name of Christ

Elder Paul B. Pieper of the Seventy spoke of the importance of the name of Jesus Christ and the “incomparable blessings” that come to individuals who take that "name upon them," beginning with their baptism. God has clearly stated through scripture that the name of His Son is not just one among many, he said.

Painting with watercolors at the campfire of faith

Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles spoke of an intimate experience he shared with the late church apostle Elder Richard G. Scott. It started with a simple invitation: “Gerrit, would you like to watercolor with me?” asked the elder, who died in 2015. It ended with Elder Gong appreciating the several moments of Elder Scott’s faith and kindness. He said he learned about God’s love through the many moments he spent with Elder Scott and his watercolors by a campfire. God "loves us more and knows us better than we love or know ourselves," Elder Gong said.

Minister to new church members as the Savior did

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles pointed out that the Amazon River in his home country of Brazil consists of two rivers that flow together, then combine to become a mighty force. Similarly, people from different backgrounds can come together in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Soares admonished church members to be aware of people who have recently converted to the faith, and not let church assignments get in the way of making them feel welcome.

Building a foundation of faith

Bishop Dean M. Davies of the church’s Presiding Bishopric compared each church member’s faith to his experience in finding a site for the church’s temple in Vancouver, British Columbia, which was finished in 2010. After several months of searching for a suitable site for the building, then-church President Gordon B. Hinckley took Bishop Davies and other leaders to one particular site in the Vancouver area. It was not the site that Bishop Davies had originally found for the temple, but President Hinckley told him that was where the Lord wanted the temple. President Hinckley was able to envision where God wanted his temple to be built, Bishop Davies recalled of that day. In similar fashion, Bishop Davies called on members of the church to build their lives and faith on four building blocks:

Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world

The church’s Book of Mormon is the word of God

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the kingdom of God on Earth

Joseph Smith is a prophet, and there are living prophets on the earth today.

Firm and steadfast in the faith of Christ

Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles opened the Saturday afternoon session of general conference by admonishing church members to be firm and steadfast in their faith.

He then shared three examples of church members who faced difficult life challenges and remained faithful. Eternal truths of the gospel

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, the church's highest governing body, cautioned church members to use proper sources when searching for truth. A lot of information is disseminated, but not all of it is true, he reminded them.

"When we seek the truth about religion, we should use spiritual methods appropriate for that search: prayer, the witness of the Holy Ghost, and study of the scriptures and the words of modern prophets." @OaksDallinH #GeneralConference

Those principles and teachings include a knowledge that God exists and has established a way for all of his children to progress. Mortal life — the time on earth in which individuals exercise agency, or the ability to choose — is part of that progression. And gender is part of each individual's eternal identity, he said. God provided a savior through Jesus Christ and his Atonement. These and other "eternal truths" explain why church members think and act as they do, he said. Elder Oaks also encouraged church members whose faith has faltered to remember repentance, faith in Jesus Christ, and to seek help from spiritual leaders. —Linda Williams

Warns members of ‘pharisaical focus’ on checklists, encourages looking at gospel principles as a whole

Elder David A. Bednar, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, warned church members to not develop a “pharisaical focus” on gospel checklists, instead of remembering the overarching reasons for keeping the commandments of God. Pharisees, members of an ancient Jewish sect, are now commonly known for their strict observance of the traditional and written law, and pretensions of superior sanctity. Elder Bednar encouraged those listening to develop “true faith” focused on Jesus Christ and on his redemptive mission, and to see gospel programs and principles as one great whole. The changes announced Saturday to the church schedule are not just structural, but require families to live up to increased responsibilities, he said.

Overcoming fear through faithfulness, spirituality

"Fear is not new," Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said in his address. He acknowledged that all church members face some sort of fear. He listed three ways to overcome concerns: Stand in holy places, which are regarded by church members as locations that include homes, church meetinghouses and temples; set aside worldly influences and seek spirituality, noting that daily faithfulness will bring peace in life; and trust the Lord's promises, as they will all be fulfilled.

Encouraging members to make their homes ‘sanctuaries of faith’

Elder Steven R. Bangerter of the Seventy encouraged members of the church to make faith in Jesus Christ the foundation of their homes, and to make their homes “sanctuaries of faith.” He urged parents to teach their children candidly and lovingly, and to never leave their homes or end a telephone conversation without saying "I love you." His talk followed other church leaders’ admonitions to make church more “home-centered.”

Overcoming life's challenges through forgiveness, giving your will to God

When people are faced with difficult things in life, asking "why me?" never takes away the hard things, said Brother M. Joseph Brough, second counselor in the Young Men general presidency, an organization for young male members of the church. He pointed out that the Lord requires people to overcome challenges. That can best be done by forgiving others and giving one's will to God, he said.

Details given about shortened Sunday worship schedule

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained a new, consolidated Sunday worship schedule that will begin in January 2019. Church services will begin with a 60-minute sacrament meeting, followed by a 50-minute class that will switch by week. Classes for Sunday School will take place on the first and third Sundays. Meetings for the faith's priesthood quorums, Relief Society and Young Women will be held on the second and fourth Sundays. Primary, a program for children, will be held each week.

President Russell M. Nelson opens general conference

President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened general conference by announcing there will be "organizational adjustments" to church programs. He pointed out that with worldwide church growth, many members don't live near a meetinghouse, and that a "home-centered" church should be supported by what happens at the meetinghouse. Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve then explained the adjustments.

Nelson, whom Latter-day Saint faithful consider a prophet, seer and revelator, has gone on a ministry tour across the globe and asked Latter-day Saint youth to fast for seven days from social media. Several weeks back, church officials announced new style guidelines for referring to the church and reemphasized their desire for people to avoid using terms such as “LDS Church” and “Mormon Church.” Just Friday, church officials announced that the choir formerly known as The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will now go by the name The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. — Whitney Evans
