LEHI — Instead of being at home, 15-year-old Cade Adams spent Tuesday evening at Texas Roadhouse in Lehi thanking restaurant patrons for simply showing up.

Ten percent of the night's sales went to Adams' Eagle Scout project. He had a goal of raising $1,500 to buy new LED lights for his father's memorial at the Joseph D. Adams Memorial Park in Lehi. Officer Joseph Adams was shot to death in 2001 during a routine traffic stop in Lehi.

Officer Adams was attempting to handcuff Arturo Javier Scott Welch during the stop when Welch pulled out a gun and shot the officer. Welch suffered multiple gunshot wounds when Adams fired back. Welch survived and pleaded guilty to capital murder charges in April 2002. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In 2011, Lehi city officials honored Adams with the First Responder Memorial near 1870 N. State Street.

With the recent police shooting in Holladay, Cade had his own words of encouragement for the children who also lost a father.

"Their legacy won't end either. What they did was good and I want to send my condolences to them," said Cade Adams.

Cade's grandfather, Thad Adams, said support from the community is what helped him deal with the grief of losing a son.

"It will mean a lot to us now and through the years," said Thad Adams. "We are touched by a community that remembers and we are touched by the support."

The Adams family hoped Tuesday night's turnout would be an example of how communities can show support to the Barney and Richey families.

"I want them to know that our family loves their families and that they'll see them again and it's not the end," said Cade Adams.
