SALT LAKE CITY — The tiniest things can make us happy.

If you have seen something that has made you grin, touched your heart or inspired you to take action, we want to hear about it. Each week, we share these experiences in this column, hoping to inspire you to do something to make this world better, as well.

On offering a backup plan:

Karen P.

"My groceries were loaded in the trunk. I shut the trunk lid firmly, then realized, to my horror, that my purse with keys and cell phone were also in the trunk. I borrowed a phone from someone walking by in the parking lot to call my husband to come rescue me. There was no answer. I called a neighbor to try to find him.

"To pass the time while waiting, I went back inside the store and sat in the deli/café section. I didn’t know if my neighbor was able to reach my husband. I asked a gentlemen sitting near if I could borrow his cell phone to call the neighbor to see if my husband was on the way. The gentlemen not only willing gave me his phone, he insisted on buying me something to eat. About half an hour passed before the gentleman was ready to leave the store. He turned to me and gave me his phone number written on a napkin with these words: 'Please call me if for some reason your husband doesn’t come. I will be sure to return and see that you get home safely.' Little did he know my home was 50 miles away!

"After about an hour, my husband came. I was calm knowing whether he came or not, I had a new friend who would see that I got home."

On starting a chain reaction:

"My husband and I went on a date this weekend to Cold Stone Creamery. There was a gentleman in line in front of me. I didn't notice him, as I was busy picking out our ice cream we were sharing.

"When I went to pay I found out he had left $10 for the people behind him. It was such a sweet gesture. He had already left the store, so I couldn't say thank you. There was change left over, which I passed to the young man behind me. He then returned it to the next person and so on for about six customers. It was fun to watch the ripple effect of one man's kindness. Thank you, kind gentleman, for making several people happy that night! My ice cream was extra sweet."

"I was stopped at a busy intersection waiting for a light to turn green and noticed people in front of me and across the street getting out of their cars and running over to the car several cars ahead of me. I was worried there had been an accident.

"When the light turned green, eight to 10 young men got behind and on the sides of the car and pushed the older women's car, which had stalled, out of the intersection down the street to safety. Tears ran down my face as I watched it all unfold. There were so many people that had run over to help that not all of them could push the car. They ran behind supporting the effort. There are good people all around us!"
