Gene Kennedy reportingA Kearns family woke up to something very disturbing. Burglars stole some of their belongings and stabbed their dog.
Despite the puncture wound on its backside, the animal is walking and expected to be fine.
Delwin Liddiard accidentally left his bedroom window open. Burglars walked in while he and his family were sleeping. No one heard anything, including an attack on the family's Labrador "Brownie."
But when they awakened early this morning they found Brownie stabbed and several items taken, including a wallet, an xbox video game system and some CDs.
The family thinks the burglars may have stabbed the dog because she was trying to defend the home.
Delwin Liddiard, Resident: "She gets overprotective when people walk in the house or walk on the sidewalk by our house. She doesn't just like people walking in. She hates strangers. She doesn't get real comfortable around them. I feel bad because it was my fault that my window was open."
Liddiard hopes the sheriff's department will catch whoever did this. But cases like these are very difficult to solve. Investigators hope the thieves left fingerprints and already have a criminal record.
If they try to pawn the items, they may be able to track down the suspects that way. But otherwise, most of the time, many of these victims never get their belongings back.
This story is definitely a reminder to everyone that if a door or window is accessible to anyone from outside, don't leave it open.
The Humane Society is offering a $2,000 reward for the thieves. They want to show the community violence against pets won't be tolerated.
