SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, after many years of attempts, has finally gained enough members to open a stake in Hyderabad, India.
Elders Donald L. Hallstrom and Anthony D. Perkins of the church's Quorum of the Seventy joined Elder Dallin H. Oaks, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in the May 27 groundbreaking event.
The Church has had a presence in India for over 160 years, when missionaries from both Utah and Great Britain tried to impress onto the Indian people. Their attempts had little success due to language barriers.
The first branch was established in 1981, and a mission was created in Bangalore in 1993. Native Gurcharan Singh Gill was named as the mission's president.
Today, approximately 10,000 Latter-day Saints live in India.
