LOS ANGELES - "The Avengers" has only been out in the U.S. for less than two weeks and it's already made over $380 million and over $1 billion worldwide. Disney now has a tree that grows money with the superhero team-up movie and a sequel is already in the works, but director Joss Whedon could be out.
Whedon has been a fanboy favorite for years with his TV shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly." But "The Avengers" has made him more than a fanboy crush; he's now one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood.
With the massive success of Avengers everyone wants to know what's next for Whedon and when he'll start shooting Avengers 2. The truth is Whedon himself may never start shooting Avengers 2.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times Whedon said he's unsure if he's going to continue on with the franchise.
"You know, I'm very torn. It's an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else's story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool."

While it would be a loss to have Whedon give up the director's chair for "The Avengers 2" his move is admirable. In a time when just about everything in Hollywood seems to be a remake, a sequel, prequel or an adaption, Whedon wants to pursue original ideas. That's something of an anomaly these days.
So, we'd all love to see Whedon come back for "The Avengers" sequel, it seems we should be equally excited to see what new ideas he can give us.
