SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The number of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus has taken an upswing in the Salt Lake valley.

Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District director Sam Dickson says positive mosquito samples have been taken from throughout the valley.

Local abatement districts will increase other mosquito control efforts such as ground pesticide spraying, known as "fogging."

This type of spraying is done on the ground with either hand-held or truck mounted spraying equipment and targets adult mosquitoes.

Abatement districts will also increase their traditional aerial spraying over marsh areas, such as the areas near Salt Lake City International Airport and north of Magna.
