Salt Lake man sentenced to 1 year in jail for stabbing man in November

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was ordered Tuesday to spend a year in jail for stabbing a man last year.

Rick Dewey Dever, 45, was given credit for the 133 days he's already served in jail, according to court records. In February, Dever pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a restricted person, both third-degree felonies. Dever's assault charge was initially a second-degree felony, but the charge was reduced as part of a plea agreement.

The plea agreement states that Dever was walking downtown on Nov. 23 when he "got into an entanglement with a member of the homeless community," and stabbed a man. Dever was on probation for an unrelated misdemeanor conviction, and possessing a knife was a violation of his probation.

Police at the time said Dever entered his ex-girlfriend's tent near Beck Street and Victory Road in northern Salt Lake City and found another man inside. Dever and the man started to argue before Dever stabbed the man multiple times, according to a police affidavit.

During his sentencing Tuesday, 3rd District Court Judge Matthew Bates opted to suspend Dever's potential prison term and impose the jail sentence. Once Dever is released from jail, he will be placed on supervised probation for three years.

As of Wednesday, Dever was in the custody of the Salt Lake County Jail.
