LINDON — A sea of yellow made waves in Lindon Saturday as thousands of little rubber ducks raced to the finish line at the annual Rubber Ducky Derby.
There were balloons, slushies and, of course, many, many rubber ducks. Each duck sponsorship raised money to help grant wishes for Utah children with a life-threatening medical condition.
"Every child that has been granted a wish, their immediate family then come and watch the race," said Sue Follett a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish.
These kids know how to make a splash. It's fun for the family, but for these families it's even more fun to see their child smile.
"Days like this are amazing," said Make-A-Wish mother Alisa Larsen. "It's fun to see Daniel get excited and look forward to things." Larsen's son Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 3. He had his wish granted at the age of 5: A trip to Disneyland. Now he's nine years old and doing well, Larsen said.
The derby was also a reunion of sorts, where parents, kids and volunteers get together. They call it the "Wish Family Reunion."
"To see people he knows and remembers that he got to meet through the Make-A-Wish," Larsen said.
The Make-A-Wish Utah foundation has been organizing this event for the last 23 years, because, they say, every child deserves a wish.
