EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) -- A former candidate for mayor in Eagle Mountain has been charged in a mortgage fraud scheme.
Richard Culberson and his wife, Kathleen, are accused of paying people to use their names and credit ratings to buy property. The Attorney General's Office also filed charges alleging that the Culbersons bought their own home using their daughter and son-in-law's names and inflated their income on a loan application.
They are also accused of pocketing almost $60,000 of a home loan intended for remodeling and landscaping.
The Utah Legislature just passed Senate Bill 134 in January to create a new crime for mortgage fraud and gave the Attorney General's Office $126,000 to prosecute cases.
