I-80 reopened, I-84 westbound limited in Summit County; propane truck crash forces evacuations

COALVILLE — Residents within a mile of the I-80 and I-84 interchange in Summit County were asked to evacuate and both freeways were closed for a time after a semitruck hauling 10,000 gallons of propane crashed Wednesday afternoon, causing a propane leak.

The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. after a semitruck exited westbound I-80 to get onto I-84. The freeway closures and evacuations were made after that, Summit County officials wrote in a Facebook post. Utah Department of Transportation officials reported at 4:50 p.m. that both directions of I-80 have reopened. Around 6:20 p.m. UDOT announced that eastbound I-84 has reopened from Henefer to Echo Junction; westbound I-84 was being limited to one lane as of 7:40 p.m.

The closures created heavy travel delays Wednesday. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Park City Fire District officials posted on Facebook that a semitruck hauling propane rolled over and propane was leaking. Summit County officials added that the driver "indicated he was transporting 10,000 gallons of propane and reported a leak."

As a result, residents within a mile of the scene site were asked to evacuate and roads between Coalville and Henefer were also evacuated, county officials said.

Fire officials added that multiple agencies, including a HAZMAT team, were called out to the scene.
