Governors' meeting focuses on energy use

(KSL News) Energy efficiency is the topic tonight at the annual Governor's meeting in Washington D.C.

According to the American Almanac, the United States accounts for only 5 percent of the world's population, yet Americans consume 26 percent of the world's energy. In an effort to scale some of that consumption back, the state leaders are focusing on alternative fuel use, clean energy technology and energy research.

Gov. Jon Huntsman said, "The very best ideas in terms of public policy are represented around this table in all of the 50 states. You don't need to recreate the wheel. All you do need to do is kind of look at your ideas and whether they've been implemented somewhere else or some variation of the theme."

Tonight, Gov. Huntsman, along with the country's other Republican governors, listened to John McCain assure them he's a staunch backer of states' rights. McCain used his speech at a Republican Governors Association dinner in an effort to unite the party by courting the GOP establishment.
