SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake Community College has postponed offering speaking events outdoors through the end of September 2025. On SLCC's website, the school said it will use the time “to carefully review our safety practices for events of this kind.”

The decision by Salt Lake Community College comes after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. "This step gives us time to carefully review our safety practices for events of this kind," the school wrote on its website. Lectures that involve a classroom setting are not impacted by this decision, the school said. "Even with this pause, SLCC is committed to remaining a place where all are welcome and all viewpoints can be shared and considered through civil discourse," the school said.
