Beer OK in St. George on Election Day

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- People in St. George will be able to get a beer on Election Day.

The city council voted Thursday to suspend part of a city ordinance on Election Day alcohol sales to allow beer to be served at restaurants while the polls are open on Tuesday.

Even though the state removed a ban on Election Day alcohol sales at restaurants for this year, St. George's ordinance on beer sales would still have been in effect without the council's Thursday action.

City Attorney Shawn Guzman said that could have created a situation where restaurant patrons could order a margarita, for example, but not a beer.

State legislators, led by Sen. Scott McCoy, D-Salt Lake City, pushed to have the ban removed last fall, saying the law had no rational basis and voters could simply vote after drinking at home.
