SALT LAKE CITY — One of the most frustrating parts of flying — removing your shoes at airport security — is officially over. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made the announcement on Tuesday, stating that, effective immediately, travelers across the country are no longer required to remove their shoes when passing through TSA checkpoints. “TSA will no longer require travelers to remove their shoes when they go through our security checkpoints,” Noem said during a press conference, citing improved technology and what she called “layered security” as key reasons for the change. That policy, implemented in 2006 following the attempted “shoe bomber” attack, has long been a source of inconvenience for travelers. At Salt Lake International Airport, the reaction was swift, and overwhelmingly positive. “It was really just a pain,” said one traveler at the Salt Lake International Airport. “When you're traveling with family, it's a killer,” added another traveler. And a third noted, “With all the extra carriers, and backpacks and bags, it's really nice.” The decision, according to Noem, is backed by years of advancements in screening technology and security protocols. While some wondered if the move would bring renewed risk, passengers KSL TV spoke with said they’re confident the current safety measures are more than enough. “I think the scanning and all that and other security measures — they're taking care of it correctly,” one traveler said. And while the change may seem small, frequent fliers said it will have a big impact. “Fantastic,” one woman told us. “I’ve been wearing slip-on shoes forever. Now I can wear my regular shoes.” Another added, “It’s just a huge pain. I’ll be glad to keep my shoes on.” At Salt Lake International Airport, KSL TV confirmed with TSA agents that the new policy is already in effect. That means next time you head to the airport, socks — or the scramble to find them — are no longer a necessity. And when we asked travelers if they were worried about the safety side of things with this change, the answer was a unanimous "no."
