SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Provo businessman is planning to run against Utah Gov. Gary Herbert in the upcoming Republican primary.
Richard Martin is making his first foray into politics by joining the race. He said his son suggested the idea a few months ago and ever since then Martin couldn't stop thinking about it.
The financial broker has amassed millions in a 30-year career. If elected, he says he'll bring his investor-savvy to the governor's office.
Among his ideas is investing Utah's reserve funds in gold. He's also opposed to raising taxes and says he isn't shy about cutting programs to make up for the 2011 budget shortfall.
