SALT LAKE CITY -- The Tour of Utah is off and running. Tuesday's prologue revved up this six-stage bike race, bringing some 170 cyclists to the state to show what they can do as they chase $45,000 in prize money.
The short, explosive prologue started at the State Capitol and roared through City Creek Canyon.
At the end, it was Brent Bookwalter who put up the fastest time--6 minutes, 14.5 seconds--and put on the leader's yellow jersey, at least through Wednesday's first stage. Local star Dave Zabriskie finished second.
"We're gonna have the opportunity to see some of the best riders in America," said former Olympian Eric Heiden. "Some of the best European riders will be here, and it's going to be a spectacular race."
The race's first stage runs from Ogden back to Research Park in Salt Lake City.
