Economy has some employees afraid to call in sick

SALT LAKE CITY -- A rough economy has people making sure they show up to work, maybe even if they shouldn't.

With all the news of layoffs around the country, some people say they'll do whatever they can to catch their employer's attention.

Some are even deciding not to call in sick; they'd rather be sniffling and coughing in the office to prove their dedication to the company.

But staff consultant Holly Engar at the Employer's Council says companies should not punish an employee for taking a needed sick day.

"If people have leave that's available to them, then absolutely, let them take it," she said.

Although she does say make sure the sick day is necessary.
