MT. PLEASANT, Sanpete — Two Sanpete County schools were placed on secure protocol for about an hour on Monday after a baby bear was seen nearby.
A statement from the North Sanpete School District said officials were looking for a "possible mama bear" near Mt. Pleasant Elementary and North Sanpete High School after a smaller bear was detained and waiting for the Department of Natural Resources.
The school district asked those nearby to contact police if they see a bear.
After the Department of Natural Resources determined the baby bear was alone, the school district said students would be safe to travel home as normal. It said the police would still patrol the area "as a safety precaution."
Under secure protocol, doors to the schools are locked and people are accounted for but classes continue as normal. The school district said the students were safe.
The police department said in a post around 1 p.m. that the bear was relocated, and officers are continuing to patrol.
