Sandy man dies after altercation with officers following domestic violence call, police say

SANDY — A man died Sunday after being shot by police in Sandy.

According to Sgt. Michael Olsen with the Sandy Police Department, officers responded to a domestic violence incident on Sunday afternoon near Shady Meadow Drive.

They spoke to a man who appeared to be in his forties who lives in one of the homes on that street.

"Officers were attempting to engage in conversation with that male when he pulled a weapon from his lower leg and charged at the officers," Olsen said.

The officers fired four shots just inside the house just before 3 p.m.

"Medical attention was immediately given to the male from my officers on scene and then from paramedics," Olsen said. "The male was transported by paramedics to a local hospital and has since been pronounced deceased."

Police couldn't provide details about the domestic dispute, who made the 911 call and who, if anyone else, was inside the home and who lives there. Neighbors Denise and Gregory McGinn saw a man speaking with police around 10:30 a.m. before the shooting.

"We overheard him saying he had just gotten out of jail, and his wife, I guess, had locked the house and have taken, closed the bank account, so he had no money and he didn't have any place to stay," Greg McGinn said.

They said the man seemed distraught.

"He was just pacing back and forth," Denise McGinn said.

It was quiet until hours later, around 3 p.m.

"I saw four police cars run by and then two more," Gregory said.

The McGinns said they didn't hear shooting or any kind of verbal altercation. Police taped off a car across the street from their house, which belonged to the man who died in the shooting. It was parked one block south of where the shooting happened.

A police booking affidavit from March 12 traces back to the same address where the shooting happened. The affidavit states a man in his forties was arrested for investigation of stealing patients' medication.

Police did not release the name of the man involved in Sunday's shooting.

The two Sandy police officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
