JELLYSTONE PARK — There is a possibly apocryphal story that suggests rangers at Yosemite National Park in the 1980s found themselves struggling to design garbage bins that would be too difficult for bears to open, but simple enough for humans to operate.

The problem? As one park ranger purportedly said: "There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."

Fact or fiction, the story seems to have at least some truth to it.

A black bear in Tennessee was recently caught on camera scoping out two parked cars, presumably looking for a snack. The bear stood up on its hind legs to try the passenger side door handle of one, only to find it locked.

But its ingenuity paid off on the second car, which was unlocked. The bear deftly pulled the driver's side door open and climbed in to rummage around.

It sauntered off when another car pulled up, seemingly with some sort of souvenir in its mouth.

Just how many bears overlap with human intelligence is still unclear, but remember to lock your car in the woods if you don't want to find yourself on the wrong side of that overlap.
