COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a crash Thursday while responding to a separate crash on I-215 near Big Cottonwood Road.

"They're saying moderate injuries. It doesn't appear to be anything life-threatening," Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cam Roden said.

Roden said the trooper was standing outside of his car when the accident occurred.

"He got hit outside of his car and then his car got hit, as well," Roden said.

Conditions are still slick in the area, and troopers are asking people to use caution when driving. Additionally, Roden said I-215 was temporarily closed down to a single lane while law enforcement worked to clear the crashes.

As of 8:05 a.m., the additional lanes had started to reopen, said Unified police detective Quin Wilkins.

Wilkins added that the accident appears to be accidental, but police are looking into how the trooper was hit.
