5A girls wrestling: Skyhawks' 4 champions, 7 finalists pace program's 1st title

OREM — Avery Winterton's win over Wasatch's Dakota Frogge wasn't just special because it represented the Salem Hills wrestler's repeat state championship over a vaunted rival Friday night.

It also helped the Skyhawks to a historic first.

Winterton and fellow two-time champions Rachel Jensen and Ruby Lindstrom helped Salem Hills pile up 211 points to capture the Skyhawks' first-ever team title at the 5A girls wrestling state tournament at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.

Makayla Carrick added an individual title at 125 pounds to help the Skyhawks pull away from a 1-point edge over two-time defending 5A champion Wasatch after Thursday's first day of competition.

"We've come in second or third a couple of years in a row; we've never quite had a big enough team (to win a title)," Winterton said after her match. "Wasatch just has so many good girls, and a great program.

"But the new switch to only allow one wrestler to score points, it's big for us. Not only do we have seven finalists out there scoring for us but all of our girls in the consolation doing their hard work, as well."

Wasatch's Marabelle Brown won her third championship at 130 pounds to lead the runner-up Wasps, and Hillcrest had four individual champions to finish third.

That included Eva Zimmerman, the Huskies senior who added her name to a growing list of four-time state champions since the Utah High School Activities Association first sanctioned girls wrestling in 2021 with a 97-second pin fall at 115 pounds.

"If I had lost today, I was going to be just as happy today," said Zimmerman, who wrapped up her senior season with a perfect 35-0 record. "It's a process every day in the room for all those years, all the hours I spent doing extra, and I'm just proud to know that I worked for it. If I didn't get it today, I was going to be OK with it."

That championship match was the longest match of the tournament for Zimmerman, who has scholarship offers from collegiate powers Grand Valley State and North Central. After a first-round bye, she pinned back-to-back opponents in a combined 1 minute, 54 seconds before Salem Hills' Hannah Coyne took her to 1:37 in the final.

Hillcrest teammates Caroline Pastrana also added a repeat title, and Zimmerman's younger sister Katie won at 105 pounds.

"It's amazing to see all of the competition that you get now," Zimmerman added. "In just four years, girls wrestling has skyrocketed, and I'm so grateful I could be a part of that."
