MAUI, Hawaii — With the start of October, it means we are one month away from humpback whale season in Hawaii.
The season normally lasts from November to May, and the peak sightings happen from January to March — which is just about the time people are most wanting to get away from the freezing cold winters on the mainland.
To be sure, sighting these amazing creatures takes some timing and a lot of luck. I was unfortunately not able to spot a humpback whale when I went whale watching back in the first grade, though we did see some dolphins as they were traveling alongside our boat.
But that wasn't the case for one social media user off the coast of Maui.
Check out this amazing, well-timed video of a humpback whale calf breaching the water — slow-motion included.
Grace, power and beauty. A humpback whale calf leaps completely out of the water near Maui, Hawaii.

Of course, as a local kid, I will always warn you to follow the guidance of Hawaii officials and keep your distance from our beautiful creatures (monk seals, sea turtles, etc.) when possible.
Then again, who wouldn't want to capture something like this from this distance? Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime moment!
