KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Police identify Kortnie Benson Barajas as the victim of a rollover crash near Kyhv Peak on Friday.
  • Police say Zachary Ingalls, the driver, reported the incident after arriving at the ER.
  • The crash is under investigation; a GoFundMe webpage says Barajas was a beloved mother of five.

PROVO — Police have identified the woman found dead in a crashed car off Kyhv Peak Road on Friday as Kortnie Benson Barajas.

About 7 a.m. Friday, Provo police were notified when a 33-year-old man "checked in at the ER with head and leg injuries. The patient reported to staff that his vehicle had rolled off Kyhv Peak Road, and that another person was still in the vehicle, unresponsive," Provo police said in a news release.

Officers located the overturned car about 50 yards from the road and found a female inside the car, deceased.

Provo police released Barajas's identity to the public on Monday and identified the driver of the vehicle as Zachary Ingalls of Orem. Detectives are still investigating the relationship between the two individuals.

The Provo accident team closed the road for about six hours while processing the scene, the release said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Asked whether the death appears suspicious, Provo police spokeswoman Janna-Lee Holland said on Friday that it was being investigated as an accident, "and we're still trying to piece the gap between the rollover and the ER."

Barajas was described as "a beloved friend, sister, daughter, mother and wife," on a GoFundMe* webpage set up to help cover funeral expenses and provide for her five children.

"Kortnie's sudden passing has left a deep void in our lives," the fundraiser states. "She was happiest when surrounded by nature, camping with her family and sharing her love for the outdoors. Kortnie leaves behind five wonderful children who were her world."
