MARTHA'S VINEYARD — Fifty years ago Friday, America began a new love/hate relationship with sharks ... and learned that bigger boats are needed when hunting Great Whites.
Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" was released on June 20, 1975, in more than 400 theaters. Going to the beach has never been the same.
The movie grossed $7.9 million in the first few days, at the time a record.
In addition to raising fears about sharks, it also boosted tourism for Martha's Vineyard, where parts of the movie were filmed. This weekend, there is a 50th anniversary celebration happening on the island, drawing tourists from all around.
The New York Yankees are even marking the occasion with a special Jaws-inspired milkshake at the ballpark this weekend only.
