ST. GEORGE — Three passengers in an airplane that crashed in a remote part of Arizona Sunday survived and were able to hike to safety.
The plane had taken off from the St. George Regional Airport.
The private airplane that departed Sunday crashed about three miles south of the Utah-Arizona border, said St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker. The three occupants were able to get out of the crashed plane and then hike to a fire command post.
Investigators were notified about 6:15 p.m.
The plane had "lots of fuel and is on fire," Stoker said.
Due to the lack of road access in the area where the plane crashed, fire crews could not access the area with their brush trucks. Fire crews were shuttled to the location of the crash with the help of citizens and their personal off-road vehicles, he said. The crews were letting the plane burn and were working to keep the fire contained.
Fire crews from the St. George airport and Arizona are part of the response teams.
What caused the crash wasn't immediately known.
