Taylorsville police identify man killed after allegedly pointing gun at officers

TAYLORSVILLE — A man shot and killed by police responding to a report of a domestic violence incident had pointed a gun at officers, Taylorsville police said Monday.

Foueti Afeaki, 33, was in a garage at 3954 W. 5820 South, about 11 a.m. Sunday when officers arrived to investigate a report of a domestic violence situation at the home, according to police.

"While officers were speaking with Afeaki, he produced a handgun and three Taylorsville officers discharged their firearms. Afeaki was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died," police said in a prepared statement on Monday.

The three officers have been placed on standard paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an Officer-Involved Critical Incident investigation headed by Unified police.

According to court records, Afeaki had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the shooting accusing him of failing to show up to Salt Lake City Justice Court on a citation issued last summer for domestic violence.
