OREM — It was a running joke among Spanish Fork wrestlers Saturday night, but there may be some truth to it: The Dons are required to win a state wrestling title every 20 years.
Karson Shelley clinched his third state championship as Spanish Fork held off Box Elder 272.5-256 for the Dons' first title since 2004 at the UCCU Center.
Junior Wetzel (150) and Alex Koyle (165) each added an individual championship for the Dons, who clinched their fourth team championship in program history and first since winning consecutive titles in 2003 and 2004
"We won our first state title back in 1984, then we ended up winning one in 2003 and 2004. Now 20 years later, we're keeping the 20-year champion streak going," said Koyle, with his tongue placed strongly in his cheek. "Hopefully we'll be able to break that and come back to win another one next year."
Shelley blitzed Salem Hills' Breyton Bankes 8-4 to improve to 53-2 at 120 pounds, Wetzel won by technical fall over Box Elder's Tayson Wylie at 150, and Koyle held off Wasatch's Wyatt Hanssen 6-4 at 165 to give the Dons three individual champions.
"Our coaching staff is phenomenal. They really pushed us," senior Koyle said. "I feel like we outlast a lot of guys. I'm probably not as well conditioned as the rest of my team, but they're all a bunch of bulldogs. I'm really proud of what we did this year."
Conley Evans (106), Jackson Ricks (144) and Brandon Murray (175) each finished first to lead runner-up Box Elder with 256 points. Wasatch (226.5), Salem Hills (129) and Viewmont (97) rounded out the top five.
Woods Cross' Cash Henderson notched a second-period pin at 215 pounds to clinch his third state title.

4A championship
Ethan Sharp opened Uintah's repeat bid for a 4A state title with a thrilling win in the first match of the 4A championship finals, but the coronation didn't stop there.
Sharp fended off Payson's Daxton Jolley 6-5 at 106 pounds, and Rykan Hacking (120), Michael Alexander (126) and Brody Rhoades (150) each won an individual title to pace Uintah to its fourth championship in as many years Saturday at the UCCU Center.
It's the 27th state championship in program history for the Utes, the second-most in all classifications since the Utah High School Activities Association first sanctioned the sport in 1938.
Payson's Landen Shurtleff won his third state title with a win over Mountain View's Isaac Mcgee at 190 pounds to pace the Lions to second place with 239.5 points.
Colton Theobald (144) and Quayde Beck (165) also finished first in their respective weight classes for Payson.
Timpanogos (127), Mountain View (126) and Mountain Crest (105) rounded out the top five.
