GUNNISON — A central Utah woman has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that happened nearly two years ago.
Billie Jean Hendricks, 68, of Gunnison, was charged Friday in 6th District Court with negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, a second-degree felony.
On May 13, 2022, a Toyota Tacoma was driving on state Route 28 in Sanpete County about 2:30 p.m. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the Tacoma was "weaving," when it went off the road to the right, swerved back onto the road and crossed into on-coming traffic, hitting a Nissan Xterra nearly head-on.
The Nissan rolled and the driver, Cameron C. Taylor, 38, of Orem, was ejected and died at the scene, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
According to the state statue under which Hendricks was charged, prosecutors believe she "was under the influence of alcohol, any drug, or the combined influence of alcohol, and any drug to a degree that renders the actor incapable of safely operating a vehicle."
Additional details were not immediately available. It was not known Friday why it took nearly two years for charges to be filed.
