5A girls volleyball: Maple Mountain wins first state title 3-1 over Bountiful

OREM — Bountiful handed Maple Mountain its first set loss of the playoffs but wasn't able to stop the top-ranked Golden Eagles from claiming their first state title Saturday at the UCCU Center in the 5A girls volleyball state championship.

The second-seeded Redhawks looked to avenge last year's semifinal loss to win their second title in three years, but Maple Mountain's dominance came through in the end, as it has all postseason long.

The Golden Eagles were well on their way to a fourth-straight sweep with wins in the first two sets, but Bountiful wasn't going down without a fight.

The Redhawks improved from a 25-14 first-set loss to lose the second by just 3 points, 25-22. They carried the momentum into a do-or-die third set, and even led by 10 points at one moment, 16-6, before winning the set 25-18 to send it to a fourth.

The fourth set was tied 6-6 early, but Maple Mountain slowly pulled away and won 25-19 on an overhit Bountiful shot to reach the mountaintop for the first time in its 14-year history.

The state championships culminate Saturday night with the 6A title match between first-seeded Skyridge and three-time reigning champ and second-seeded Lone Peak at the UCCU Center.
