COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police officers shot and killed a man wielding swords in Cottonwood Heights late Halloween night after responding to a domestic violence call.

Unified police received report of a domestic violence incident near Fort Union and 200 East just before 11 p.m. Tuesday. As officers arrived, they saw "the person of interest" leave the area and drive toward Cottonwood Heights, according to a statement from Cottonwood Heights police.

Officers followed the car to a dead-end street, Creekcove Circle, where the man got out of his car and brandished two swords at Unified police officers and Cottonwood Heights police officers. The statement said the man was "advancing toward the officers" while holding the swords.

"The officers tried to control the man using a Taser device, but it was ineffective. The officers eventually shot the man and then applied lifesaving measures until UFA medics arrived with advanced life support," Cottonwood Heights police said.

Medics on scene attempted to save the man's life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The statement does not indicate how many officers fired at the man, how many shots were fired or where he was hit. It was unclear why Cottonwood Heights police did not release details about the fatal police shooting until more than 17.5 hours after the incident.

The man's name has not yet been released.

A neighbor identified only as John told KSL he heard two gunshots around the time of the incident. He said he looked outside and saw police giving a man CPR in the street next to a black SUV with its door open.

The police shooting is being investigated by the Officer Involved Critical Incident Team.
