OGDEN — An inmate at the Weber County Jail in Ogden died Friday, marking the third death at the jail this year.
The inmate, whose name was not released, was found unresponsive in a cell at 5:45 p.m. on July 21, the Weber County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Tuesday.
"Initial investigation shows that the individual suffered from a medical episode that was not self-inflicted," the office said in the statement.
The Weber County Attorney's Office is still investigating the death.
It marks the third death this year in the Weber County Jail, Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Joshua Marigoni said. But Marigoni said this is not an unusual amount for the jail and does not mark an uptick in inmate deaths, pointing out that periodic deaths are to be expected in a population as large as around 800 prisoners.
"Any in-custody death is tragic," Marigoni said Wednesday. "But we look at the jail as if it's a city. … We have all the problems of the community, all the problems of society, in the jail as well … so sometimes we have deaths in the population."
In 19 years at the facility, Marigoni has seen a mix of deaths by suicide, and natural or medical-related deaths.
This death follows a June 28 inmate death at Davis County Jail in Farmington. An inmate at the Iron County Jail in Cedar City was also found dead April 19, and another in Washington County Jail in Hurricane on March 10.
